There are times I swear Sean reads my posts, and then I remember that he still can't read things like "bulldozer" and "excavator" without assistance, and why really would he read my posts when he has exciting words like that to read. Even when they touch on the movie Rio.

Sean was talking to Mayra about Rio and explaining the various characters. There was someone who owned Blue the Macaw, a lady who looked like Mommy. (Not true, strictly speaking...my eyes are brown...) And there was another blue bird named Jewel. And there was a boy with brown skin who stole the macaw and then tried to help him because he was sorry.

We discussed race for a bit and how there are good and bad people regardless of the color of their skin. And that most people are neither wholly good or bad, but what they do very much determines who they are, like helping the bird instead of giving him to people that would harm him.

"Mom, you know, Jesus has brown skin and I have pink skin," Sean informed me. For those of you thinking Sean is instituting a new doctrine, Sean and Jesus are friends from school. Mostly because they like to share fruit loops and make their table-mate Alyssa shout instructions to keep them in line.

"Is Jesus a good friend?" I asked, curious to see how far sharing fruit loops get you with my second-born.

"Yeah. He's a good friend, he plays with me. Bryce is a bad friend because he tripped me."

"Did Bryce say he was sorry?" I asked, curious again, as Bryce was his best friend last week.

"Yeah, but he tripped me." Ah, my little Saxon warrior. Intent means nothing, pay the weregild or else.

"Mom, you know, sometimes you're a bad mom," Sean said. He was grinning wickedly.

"Am I," I said, letting him hear the danger in my voice, "when?" He has to learn about women sometime.

It seems he's already light years ahead of Jim and Jake on that score because he suddenly grew quite innocent. The sidelong glance to the part of the fridge where I keep the ice cream was so quick it might have been missed by anybody who didn't know him.

"Well, I never heard you hit anyone in preschool, so you must be a good Mom," Sean said quickly.

Hmm. Back to Netflix with Rio. And perhaps I will put a lock on the fridge.
