Symphony night is a tradition with Jim. We clear our schedules, we go out to dinner, and then we go to the symphony. Usually we make it in time to catch some of the organ performance in the hallway.
The San Jose symphony is 135 years old, beating out that little band of musicians to the north by 35 years. Suck it SF. Of course, the SF symphony has it in location and budget, so San Jose suffers a bit. Not too badly though. The performances are good, the prices reasonable. Certainly much more cozy than a day at Candlestick.
Being a smaller symphony the choices are sometimes limited. Old favorites are played more than once because it packs the house. This would be about our third time with Beethoven's 9th, I believe, and I much preferred the previous performance. Namely that I didn't fall asleep. Beethoven is never background music. It should always impress. Then again, my body could have realized that I had no responsibilities to anyone for the next two and half hours and lulled me to sleep on its own accord.
It was nice, though to get out. One of these years I'm hoping we will neither be ill nor recovering from illness and can just enjoy the performance.
