James now babbles with distinction. Dadadadada means "Bring me the big one so I may smile at him." Jim is especially prone to picking James up whenever James smiles. Other babble sounds are "Hewuuu" which Sean encourages and "Heyyyayaaa" which I think he inherited from me. Both of these mean, "Non-father person, please pick me up."

This brings us to the crux of the matter. James is very lazy about learning to crawl as all he as to do is say one of the former things (or burst into a giant cloud of fuss) and his father or brothers will pick him up.

I put toys just out of his reach so that he will push himself a bit further. For this reason, Jim is calling me Tiger Mother and does a rather unflattering (if tremendously funny) impression of my parents. But this is how I was raised. Push yourself just a bit.

The cats, I might add, back me up on this one and move themselves slightly out of reach so that James has to flail to them. They then let him pull (and once bite) on their tails without retaliation. Amazing animals or incredibly dumb. You pick.

Still the "Hewuuu" is adorable and very hard to resist. Maybe once he manages a clear and precise "Mama" we can put this to rest.
