Happy 11th to Jakob
Sep. 11th, 2012 08:15 amThis I get the feeling was the last massive birthday. That sort of change between grade school's need for directed parties and middle school birthdays spent hanging out free-form with friends. Jake stands nearly as tall as I do, but much thinner. He's going to be a handsome fellow. The height doesn't yet suit him, he's still fairly young and silly and loves to clown. He wants to remain a kid, continue having birthdays and cupcakes and play.
The trampoline park was a nice compromise. There were several groups of teenagers having birthdays right along side six-year olds. Everyone enjoyed the thrill of escaping gravity (if only slightly) for the day. We did play "pin the tank on the target" a variant on pin the tail on the donkey. Most kids managed to come close, so I'm guessing my blindfold is not up to par.
Jake followed the siren call of the video games this year, approaching the arcade reverently, his eyes wide. Like his father, the lighted screens send him to another world, a place apart. The only thing that dragged him back to the reality of his birthday was the insufficient funds to play more.
I'm not stupid. I kept his wallet. $70 in birthday money can disappear in an instant with an 11-year old. Especially one lost in the beauty of the game.
